22nd April - Gisburn, Clapham, Ingleton & Devils Bridge

Post by Oli on Tue 4 Apr 2017 - 10:13

So after Craig's suggestion of doing more trail centres and doing Gisburn towards the end of the month I've put down Saturday 22nd for Gisburn if everyone is free and fancies it....we can ride the red route and finish with the blue or even do the red again if you want to extend as I know people like to hit 25 miles on a Saturday.

That being said I've got a few options though which you may or may not be interested in for additional rides, a cheap overnight stay and f course a few beers. If we ride for 1030 from Gisburn we should be finished for lunch, grab something to eat at Gisburn cafe as I hear it's quite good then head off to Clapham which is about 15 minutes away at most. There is a ride from there called Tunnels and Bridges which is quite scenic with a reasonable amount of downhill towards the end (check out my poor attempt at video editing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL5TEHA-ud0 ) it wouldn't be a super long ride, by the time we have done Gisburn and Tunnels and Bridges it would be about 30ish for the entire day but you will have earnt some beers.

After that head to Ingleton (about 10 minute drive from Clapham) where there are multiple choices of accommodation but these would have to be booked quickly, there is plenty of tenting available if anyone fancies that but there is also a decent youth hostel with storage for bikes or a huge bunk house by the side of the road, I've never stopped in it so can't comment but I hear good things. A few decent pubs in the village so plenty of drinking and some great food (again would have to know numbers to book).

Then on the Sunday I know a good ride from Devil's Bridge near Kirkby Lonsdale which is only 13 miles but has 2000 feet of climbing and a really good descent and again some stunning views.

Links bellow to all the relevant accommodation, short notice I know but just a thought. I would offer to put people up in my accommodation (Greenwood Leigh Holiday Park) but my parents will be there that weekend so not enough room.

There are also numerous BnB's available in the village and pubs that do accommodation but I was going for cheapest options. Mason's Arms is where we would be eating so also well worth looking at to stay there as well.

Right chaps. I am going to provisionally book the meal today for 6 of us at 2000 on Saturday night but can always reduce numbers, this is assuming that Craig, Simon, Mick, Bob and myself are all going (Ian did you say you were up for it as well? I can't remember). Will have to book now to ensure we get in.

Equally you will need to book camping now if you are taking the van Mick. There are two sites which take Van's and are a short walk from the pub/village.

http://www.stacksteadfarm.co.uk/
On the road behind the Mason's where we are going to eat in the evening. They take vans as I know someone who uses it regularly but there are only 5 spots so get it booked ASAP (as in book now and cancel if needs be later).

https://thornbrookbarn.co.uk/
Slightly further walk to the pub we will eat at but nothing horrible. Glamping site so might be more money and more popular. Again book ASAP

Let me know who can come and I'll make sure all planned and organised.

I've sent an email enquiry to Stacksteadfarm as there was no answer to calls last night. I'm quite busy at work so no chance I will be able to chase during the day so Mick if you get chance do you want to have a look at both of them and see if you can get booked in.

Right, found a campsite that will take you and is cheap as chips and convenient but I haven't booked it until you say you are coming. Site is Moorgarth Farm Campsite, its £6.50 per person per night and £2 for the vehicle, have to park on the hard packed ground and no electric hookup however there is hot showers and toilet facilities and its a 15 minute walk (same walk I have to do) into the village.

Need to ring the gentleman to book it but they have availability and is a decent spot. 015242 41428
